A QUICK GUIDE TO AGUTAYAN ISLAND AND SAGPULON FALLS DAYTOUR

The coastal town of Jasaan in Misamis Oriental is simply gifted with natural wonders. Though not widely popular, these spots surely amaze travelers. Agutayan Island adorns the coast of the silent town. In the highlands, Sagpulon Falls graces the rocky wall and provides a pool for cooling down. Among many, these destinations are perfect for weekend getaway. And both can be visited in a day.  

AGUTAYAN ISLAND

Off the coast of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental, this naked island or sandbar is reached in 30-45 minutes. This crescent shaped white island is uninhabited. The half hectare sandbar is surrounded by 3 hectare very shallow coral reef. Starfish, urchins, seaweeds and various fishes abound on the shallow waters. There are also rare sightings of surgeon fish, eagle ray and other species. The place is a good site for snorkeling. There are two structures in the island. One is guardhouse and the other a lighthouse. Agutayan is a breeding ground for endangered giant clams, same species in Hundred Islands, Pangasinan. Fishing is prohibited. The island is protected and preserved.

SAGPULON FALLS

In the highlands of Solana, Jasaan, drops a gigantic waterfalls about 150 feet high. Sagpulon Falls is entouraged by smaller sprouts, the highest is 40 feet high. The drop is collected in a vast pool calling for a cool dip. From the highway of Brgy. San Isidro, Jasaan, the falls can be reached by habalhabal or 4-wheel vehicle via 6 km almost completely paved road. From the entrance, a short walk is required to get up close with the falls.

HERE'S A QUICK GUIDE

FIRST STOP, AGUTAYAN ISLAND

FOR GROUPS

From Agora Terminal in CDO, take an eastbound bus (Gingoog, Balingoan, Butuan etc). A) For a group of 10 and below, you may drop off at Brgy. Jampason. Hire a boat to the island. Rate is P1,500. B) For bigger groups, resorts in the area offer packaged trip to the island for P2,500. 

FOR SOLO TRAVELERS

Small fishers are no longer allowed to ferry guests. Join a group for island transfer or hire a boat for yourself at P1,500.

Reminders: 

1. Start your trip very early in the morning to avoid the scorching sun. 
2. Bring your own meals or snacks.
3. Bring umbrella or any material for shed.
4. Bring goggles and snorkel to explore the shallow waters.
5. There's no entrance fee to the island. The island guard who collected 150 from our group was axed for extortion.

NEXT STOP, SAGPULON FALLS

From Jampason or Kimaya, take a habalhabal, jeep or multicab to Brgy. San Isidro. Fare is P10. Alight in front of Spring View Resort. Take habalhabal to the entrance of Sagpulon Falls at P50 per head. From the entrance, take a 300-meter walk to the falls.

As of writing, registration is free. But sources say as soon as improvements will be completed, certain fee may apply.
